Welcome to Our Sporting Adventure, a UK-wide Scout competition inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This website is funded by the Peter Cruddas Foundation.

By taking part, your team will compete for medals, embrace the Olympic and Paralympic values and enjoy a balanced Scouting programme.

Build a friend
Cubs enjoyed this activity especially being able to draw around each other! They came up with the obvious answers but needed a bit of guidance. I was very impressed that it got them thinking about the Cub Scout promise as one Cub came out with think of others before yourself.

Food for thought
This was linked with the Chinese New Year Celebrations, trying new foods and learning about the culture. This again was the first time we celebrated the Chinese New Year with the Cubs and we plan to do this every year.

Fly the flag
We created paper bunting and decorated the pendants using world flags or a flag of the cubs choice. The hall is now looking amazing with the bunting surrounding the hall, it very much feels like the olympics have arrived.

Walk the marathon
We did this as part of our sponsored triathlon event including the swim a mile and cycle 10 miles. We went on a lovley evening walk, the sun shone, parents with dogs and siblings joined us and we ended the evening with a game of rounders and hotdogs. Some parents enjoyed the evening so much they have become regular helpers.!

Crab football
Tables laid on their sides for goals. 2 minute games. All 5 patrols (36 YP!) play each other. league table for scores. Play with anything up to 4 balls at a time to ensure constant action. Last 30 seconds of each game is joker time with a goal counting for double. Find this keeps them interested.

In the community
RNLI arranged a brillant evening with films of real rescues at sea; a quiz on safety at the sea side and a competition to see which Cub could dress as a Lifeboat man fastest. Great fun!

My Sistine Chapel
We used tables with wallpaper and worked in teams of 6. Great fun very messy make sure you have plenty of old shirts to keep uniforms clean.

Mini parachutes
We used bin bags, string, tape and newspaper and gave each six the challenge of designing a parachute to drop an egg (one per six) from the top of a stepladder. All the cubs made a parachute but only one cub per six could drop the egg. 3 out of six survived.

Faith visit
We visited the Sikh Temple in Gravesend. They were fantastic and also have a worksheet to complete on their website.

Citius - Faster
This is an excellent activity. We split our sixes into two groups and each designed, made, named and tested their boats. We then judged them on speed and design, followed by head to head races. When we got down to the final three teams we had a medal ceremony, handed out bronze, silver & gold medals and sang the national anthem.

Fortius - Stronger
It was very hard work rehearsing the cubs for the concert that we did for the church, but it was definately worth while. The audience loved them and if I could bottle and sell the joy on the cubs faces as they came off the stage after the first sketch, when they first heard the audience laughing and clapping out loud, I would be the richest person in the world!

Opening ceremony
Hugely successful event with scouts producing a range of 'playable' instruments from the resource heap! We were fortunate in being able to involve local scout band in whole evening event. Scouts thereby assisted by real musicians, given opportunity to have a go on band instruments and finally join in with massed band production led by band leaders.

10-mile bike trip
We did this task a little different we got a bike machine and did 10 mile each cub and we did navigation skills, we plan to take the cubs on shorter journies.

Balloon sports
We split our explorers into twos and threes, each group running different activities. Some did really well, some discovered that they need to work on their organisational skills and that small children can be challenging! Some lessons learnt.

Tracking trail
We made a trial ready for the Beavers to follow. We made potato prints of different areas around the inside and outside of our hut to follow the trail and collect things as they go.

Blindfold drop
Parents briefed by email (maps & explanation), all 30 YP dropped at their respected Patrol start points no more than 4km from our HQ - not one of them knew where they were! Admittedly it was in the dark. They even manged to do their Mothering Sunday task during the hike - Mums Tokens. YP loved it.

We looked at using this as an information sheet for new members to the town and scout group.

Grab the acorn
The beavers loved this activity. It is their new favourite game.

Snowballs
Completed on Wednesday January 11th. We built a river demarcated with rope which the abominable-yeti-snowman patrolled. We had to discuss the best way to make a snowball - consensus - the best snowball were not too small and were just one sheet of newspaper scrunched up tightly. They loved this and wanted to play again and again.

Joint Beaver sleepover
We had our joint Sleepover this weekend - in the snow at Youlbury Scout Activity Centre. Snow was spectacular, fun with tracking animals etc. and just playing in the snow. Something that our local school does not allow!!!

All three colonies joined for a pirate sleepover, the weather was terrific and the enthusiasm of the beavers knew no bounds, we took the opportunity to include many activities within the sporting adventure to create a varied and exciting programe for the "pirates"

Healthy eating cooking competition
We ran this over several nights. The competition part was delicious! The winners made a fruit smoother to drink to complement sweet chilli chicken & roasted parsnips and to finish baked pear stuffed with raisins. Cooking space was a problem - used conventional cooker and disposable barbacues. The judges want to run this again!

Flame treasure hunt
We adapted this so that each group had to identify countries from flags and pictures of places or animals specific to the region in order to earn their rings. They had a lot of fun and made it a challenge to earn their rings.

Pine cone feeders
We softened the lard in a microwave, which made it easier for the Beavers to stir in the seed.

Achieve a new skill
Each Beaver learnt a new skill from tying their tae kwon do belt to learning spanish, to learning a new football skill.

Altius – higher
We were lucky to be able to hold our meeting in the BT tower offices in Redditch. We used the conference room on the top floor and have a really good view over the whole of redditch, and even see the BT tower in Birmingham from it. This was all thanks to one of our leaders husbands who organised it for us.

A friend's ship
They absolutely loved this activity, their imagination was so vivid, and diverse. some went to the Dino world while others went to the 1960's we also had an Alien ship and an Atlantis ship. The human race is better place and has more friends for this challenge. They were really impressed when the chef from the Dino ship served up Biscuits for all to share.

Jamboree Explorer
it was great for the beavers to see a taster of what they may be able to achieve when they are old enough,

Sailing by
10 Beavers a ream of A4 paper and a 5 minute origami lesson equals over 45 little boats (almost a fleet)

Inspiration scrapbook
Beavers find it quite hard to understand inspiration and also do not know many role models - sportsmen, celebrities etc. but we enjoyed talking about what they have done and showing their certificates etc before making up scrapbooks

Trading up
Because of the time of year we played this inside and with balls and beanbags and had leaders at each table trading. Although we explained it carefully, most had a problem understanding the concept until the leaders demonstrated.

Beaver camp
We held a special Jubilee camp and had a band come to play while we had our street party. Made biscuits, crowns, commemerative plate and cup (paper), played games and so much more. Fab time had by all!

Climb Mount Olympus
We did this as part of a sponsored walk to raise funds for charity and camp funds

Climb Mount Olympus
We did this in 2 parts - the first at our St. George's Day parade, where the police closed off the streets of Richmond for us! Then again when we walked through Richmond Park to see the Queen - great fun but very tiring.

Pasta bridges
I provided the materials and was very suprised to find the variety of bridges developed.... it got very competetive with the Explorers wanting to do strength tests!!

Scouting skills decathlon
We did an amazing twist on this and ended up doing 15 activities - 5 were scouting; 5 were oylmpic and 5 were strong man activites... it went really well.

Chair shot put
Good activity - especially to then prompt discussion about paralympic events, the various disciplines, and categories (truly "sport for all"). Explorers thought it was easy - until they were shown how do do a shot put properly. It is much tougher from a fixed, lower, sitting, position.

Friendship banquet
We did a coffee and cake night to which we invited 4 other explorer units and a ranger unit (guiding) too... for a chance for us all to meet up, make new friends and we invited along a guest speaker to help us learn how to save a life and tell us all about uni too... in preparation of the future... Not a full banquet... but lots of opportunites to mix, mingle and grow as individuals!

Entrepreneurs
The explorers seemed to really enjoy this and came up with some great ideas. They also made gave great presentation to our panel of dragons.
